When the Israeli media talks about the latest 'wave of violence,' it leaves out the five unarmed Palestinians who were shot to death by soldiers and police officers in the past few months. The newspaper headlines over the past few days leave no room for doubt regarding what has been happening here lately. "Terror returns," read Yedioth Ahronoth's headline on Sunday, while Haaretz and Ma'ariv ran similar headlines on Tuesday morning. [tmwinpost] Indeed the last few days have been full of stabbing and vehicle-ramming attacks by Palestinians in Jerusalem and Hebron, the vast majority of them directed at soldiers and…Read More... | 8 Comments
A reminder that the victims of Jewish and Palestinian violence never encounter the same system of justice. On Thursday Israel's High Court of Justice rejected a petition to stop the demolition of a home to a Palestinian man accused of aiding three Palestinians in a shooting attack that killed Border Police officer Hadar Cohen in February. The appeal was filed by the father of Bilal Ahmed Abu Zeid, the Palestinian who is accused of providing weapons and transportation to the three men in the attack. In his appeal, Abu Zeid's father claims that the demolition of homes is an illegal…Read More... | 2 Comments
Having a daily routine to go back to that is free of violence is a privilege that most Israelis have and most Palestinians do not. I was out last night in Tel Aviv at a poetry book launch for a good friend when the news flashed on my phone that there was a shooting in the Sarona Market. I got that sinking feeling in my gut and couldn't take my eyes off Twitter, even as I continued to drink my beer and listen to the recitation of deeply moving and thoughtful contemporary Hebrew poetry. Life does go on here despite…Read More... | 13 Comments
Netanyahu wants to kick Arab MKs out of the Knesset for meeting with families of Palestinian terrorists. Will the same standard be upheld for those who meet with Jewish terrorists? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to punish Palestinian members of Knesset for meeting with families of Palestinians who have carried out deadly attacks against Jewish Israelis. But could his initiative backfire and end up punishing members of his own government? [tmwinpost] The prime minister announced on Sunday that he would be promoting legislation to bar three MKs who met with families of terrorists from serving in Knesset. His announcement came…Read More... | 9 Comments
West Bank town put under closure following last week's deadly attack on Israeli Border Police officers in Jerusalem's Old City. Photos and text by: Ahmad Al-Bazz / Activestills.org After three days of strict military closure, the Israeli army lifted its blockade Saturday evening on the town of Qabatiya in the northern West Bank. The blockade was put in place last week after three Palestinians from the town carried out a shooting attack at Jerusalem's Damascus Gate, killing one Israeli Border Police officer and wounding three others. The three Palestinians were immediately shot and killed by Israeli security forces. Many have…Read More...
Had a Palestinian committed the exact same crime in the exact same location, he would find himself in an entirely different justice system. Maybe 'fair' is relative. Israel's justice minister on Sunday said she "hopes" that the alleged Jewish terrorists indicted for murdering three members of the Dawabshe family will receive a fair and just trial. Hopes. [tmwinpost] According to Haaretz's Chaim Levinson and Barak Ravid, Justice Minister Shaked declined to clarify whether her hope amounts to trust in the court system or whether believes the suspects will receive a fair trial. (The Justice Ministry was quick to release a tersely-worded statement,…Read More... | 42 Comments
The blood of East Jerusalem's children, and the blood of their Israeli victims, is a reminder of one thing: there is no way to 'manage' the conflict. A year of mostly bitter, devastating events has finally come to an end. From the murder of 16-year-old Shira Banki at the Jerusalem pride parade to the grotesque behavior of the Israeli Right to the growing exclusion of Arabs from the public space, 2015 leaves behind it very few reasons for optimism. This was the year in which women continued to be murdered in horrifying numbers across the country, Gaza continued to bleed,…Read More... | 10 Comments
2015 was a year full of murder, stabbings, homophobia, and gender-based violence. I can't wait for it to be over. Damn you, 2015. Your place is in the dustbin of history. Leave us alone. You fraud. You began to shower us with specks of hope when the last elections were announced. We thought perhaps that the Israeli voter would cast away the thick layer of anxiety that has been sewn around him over 20 years of right-wing rule. Arab citizens worked tirelessly to put together the Joint List — for themselves and for the supporters of cooperation and democracy. For…Read More... | 3 Comments
When members of the opposition are trying to outflank Netanyahu on the right, even the IDF seems like a saner alternative to Israeli politicians. By Yoni Mendel "A nation in uniform," "an army that has a state," "a democracy of army bases." In academic research of the critical kind, Israel is understood as a militaristic state. This, among other things, is what the sociologist Baruch Kimmerling meant when he said, "whether we want it or not — we are a clearly militaristic society, and this militarism is also a central principle around which Israeli society is organized." Uri Ben Eliezer…Read More... | 2 Comments
When it comes to Jewish terrorism the Shin Bet is either ill-equipped or totally uninterested in preventing attacks against Palestinian civilians. After months of seemingly never-ending promises by Israel’s defense establishment, a number of Israeli youths have been arrested in connection with the arson attack in the West Bank village Duma last summer, which killed three members of the Dawabshe family. Several young Israelis were detained for questioning in recent days over their connection to Jewish extremist organizations, says the Shin Bet following the partial lifting of a gag order. Their identity still remains under gag order. Gag orders are…Read More... | 9 Comments
We often hear that that Israeli democracy is being 'hijacked' by a group of right-wing extremists. Too bad the alternatives aren't any more appealing. Labor MK Stav Shaffir, darling of the “pro-Israel, pro-peace” crowd, recently implored progressive American Jews to do what liberal Zionists have been attempting for the better half of the past decade: reclaim the “real” Zionism from the extreme right wing’s ideological bastardizations. [tmwinpost] Speaking to a conference of the Union for Reform Judaism in Florida last week, Shaffir tasked liberal American Jewry with explaining the “complexity" of Israel’s political map, namely that Benjamin Netanyahu and his proxies…Read More... | 2 Comments
The Israeli media claimed that Fadi Alloun, who stabbed a 15-year-old in Jerusalem, was shot and killed while being chased as he was holding a knife. A new video reveals that he could have been subdued, and did not pose a threat. By *John Brown Last Saturday an Israeli policeman shot and killed Fadi Alloun, a 19-year-old resident of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya, after he was suspected of stabbing a 15-year-old Israeli near Jerusalem's Damascus Gate. A video that went viral following the incident shows young Jewish Israelis egging on the policemen to kill Alloun, despite the fact…Read More...
Fear and pain flow in the streets, between Gaza and Sderot, between Hebron and Jerusalem, forcing us to think about providing enough compassion for one another so we can come to solutions to the violence. By Mijal Simonet Corech Once, Israeli academic Yael Berda and I came up with an expression: "politics of love." We never really got down it to its basics — we never needed to; somehow we both knew what we meant. According to this kind of politics, first and foremost, you feel sad when you hear that a man and a woman — parents of four children…Read More... | 1 Comment
