  • Demolishing Palestinian schools 'a quiet population transfer'

By destroying schools in Palestinian villages in Area C and elsewhere, Israel is forcing Palestinians to make a cruel choice — between their land and their children's futures. When the children of Beit Ta’mar, a village south-east of Bethlehem, left their improvised schoolhouse for winter vacation about two weeks ago, they did not know if the building would still be standing when they came back. To call the building a school is to exaggerate. It is comprised of five concrete rooms on the top of a hill, constructed by the village’s residents, who also built the road to the school. • Demonstrators march in Tel Aviv against plan to uproot Bedouins

Some 1,000 people march through the streets of Tel Aviv Saturday evening in protest of the Prawer-Begin Plan, which will see the demolition of several dozen 'unrecognized' Bedouin villages in the Negev and the uprooting of at least 30,000 residents of those villages. Alongside Tel Aviv residents, demonstrators were bused in from Arab villages and cities in the Galilee and the Negev to gather in Habima Square at sundown Saturday. The square was packed with local parents and their young children, who regularly play in the garden and who were drawn to the drums and the action of the protest. Many of…

  • Yom Kippur eve in Tuba Zangaria

After visiting Tuba Zangaria yesterday, I think I have a hunch why the “price tag” arsonists chose this village, of all Israeli Arab villages, as their latest target: The largest building in town, much larger than the mosque they torched on Sunday night, is the Yitzhak Rabin Sports Hall. (I was meaning to be facetious, but who knows, maybe there’s something to this.) These Jewish Klansmen really succeeded in striking at the heart of the nation’s enemy this time. “In 1946, the men of the al-Heib [Bedouin] tribe in Tuba founded ‘Palheib,’ which fought shoulder-to-shoulder with the Palmach. We were…

  • Israel pushes the Bedouins towards an Intifada

The government’s decision to adopt the Prawer report is the latest in a series of injustices towards Israel’s Bedouin citizens As if the immolation of relations with Egypt and Turkey wasn’t enough, the Netanyahu government decided to open a new front, this time with the Israeli Bedouins. The government approved yesterday a version of the Prawer report, which is the executive report of Judge Goldberg’s report on the Bedouin settlement in the Negev desert. The Prawer report, presented to the government in May, drew sharp criticism from human rights organizations, since it was a significant retreat from the Goldberg report…

  • Israel approves plan to uproot 30,000 Bedouins

The approval of the ‘Prawer Plan’ concerning Bedouins in the Negev desert demonstrates that Israel’s principle of divide and rule, which has been perfected in the West Bank and Gaza, also applies to citizens of Israel living inside 1948 boundaries. Perhaps the most violent component of Israel’s control over non-Jewish inhabitants since the founding of the state has been the (unequal) distribution and allocation of resources. In Area C of the West Bank, the area designated for full Israeli military and civilian control by the Oslo accords which makes up the majority of land in the occupied territories, Israel has…
