  • Teen's murder is a reminder that we are all settlers

Just as we must mourn Hallel Yaffa Ariel as a human being and a slain child, we must also mourn her as a settler — because all Israelis are responsible for her presence in the West Bank. Superlatives are inadequate to tell the sorrow of recent weeks. Thirteen-year old Hallel Yaffa Ariel was stabbed to death in her bed in the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba Thursday morning. • WATCH: Israelis demand an end to violence, the occupation

Amid the most serious wave of violence Israelis have experienced in at least a decade, several hundred left-wing Israelis protested outside the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem this weekend, demanding an end to the occupation and the violence. A larger right-wing protest was scheduled to take place in the same location Tuesday night, calling for a harsher and more violent response to the wave of stabbing attacks.

  • Fight occupation, anti-Semitism, Islamic State at the same time

The first cause must not be a rival, or a left-wing alternative, to the latter two. From what I read and hear, it seems to me the Left is talking about Israel’s occupation and onslaught in Gaza – but not about rising anti-Semitism in Europe or about Islamic State (IS) and jihadism, or at least not about how to combat them. My impression is that leftists see this as a zero-sum game: the more outrage about anti-Semitism or IS, the less about the occupation and Gaza, and since the occupation and Gaza is their main concern (mine too), they pay…
