Jerusalem posters call to ban Arab workers

Posters reading “Jews only employ Jews” were spotted near the entrance to Jerusalem Friday, three days after two Palestinians killed five Israelis in an attack on a Jerusalem synagogue.

Above the slogan in smaller letters, at the top of the Israeli flag-shaped poster, it reads: “Biblical law determines” and at the bottom it reads: “Did you know?! The terrorists that committed the massacre in Har Nof – were employed in the synagogue and its surroundings.” One of the attackers indeed was reported to have worked in a grocery store next to the synagogue.

Whoever crafted the racist message grounded it in both religious scripture and practical empiricism.

Another poster found in the same area reads: “Employed an Arab? You endangered a Jew!”

These messages echo the decision by the mayor of the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon a day earlier to ban Israeli Arab construction workers from jobs in and around schools in the name of security. The legality of his decision is in question and politicians from across the right-wing spectrum were quick to denounce the move as unacceptable. Prime Minister Netanyahu said discrimination won’t be tolerated, while Minister of the Economy Naftali Bennett said that 99.9 percent of Israeli Arab citizens are loyal (read: reliable cheap labor).

Reactions were so strong and across the board that it honestly felt at one point as if the mayor’s ban was a ploy to enable all these politicians the opportunity to resolutely declare to the Israeli public that the country is not anti-Arab – even as it prepares to push forward on Sunday the “Jewish nation state” bill in a version that does not guarantee equal rights for its non-Jewish citizens (the 20 percent of the population that is Palestinian).

However, a poll by Israel’s Channel 10 showed that 58 percent of Israelis supported the move (with 32 percent against), and several Ashkelon residents told TV reporters they are in favor. One young mother said she felt the move made her feel safer dropping her kids off at school, adding: “I have no problem with the Arab sector. Some of them are perfectly fine.” Another said, “I’d rather be racist than be a victim.”

UPDATE: I discovered a Facebook page called “Fighting for our country, for ourselves” which is filled with anti-Arab messaging, including this photo taken at a store (location unknown) with a sign reading: “Arabs not employed  here.” Many comments from Israelis on the photo express disgust and disdain, and while the photo has over 8,500 likes, the page itself only has around 600.

      – God bless the 32%. The 58% in favor need history lessons.

“One young mother said she felt the move made her feel safer dropping her kids off at school, adding: “I have no problem with the Arab sector. Some of them are perfectly fine.”

      – Racism is an Israeli value, don’t you know that by now?

Do you actually know anything about occupation and illegal settlements as the actual cause of this conflict?

Oh yeah, I know that it is bullshit. In 1929 there was neither ‘occupation’ nor ‘illegal settlements’

“Racism is an Israeli value, don’t you know that by now?”

When entire streets in Palestinian cities are covered with photos of martyrs, who’s only claim for glory is killing Jews. When streets are named after such monsters and polls show huge support for them. When they are glorified by TV hosts and PA officials. When candies are given to people on the streets after Jews are murdered. Comes Marnie and claims that the murderers from the synagogue in Jerusalem don’t represent their society.

But give Marnie a a couple of stickers on a dumpster and BOOM – “Racism is an Israeli value”.

Say something not politically correct, like Arabs wanting to kill Jews and BOOM – “Racism is an Israeli value”.

Do you even know what racism is?

Do you understand the difference between this –

Khirbet Abu Falah, near Ramallah, reported Sunday morning that settlers set a house in their village on fire, while a 50-year-old Huda Abu Ghani was inside. No one was injured, although the building was heavily damaged. The words “we will get revenge” and “price tag” were found spray painted on the walls of the house.

            Manic

Know this. The likes of you incite extremism amongst us. Your disgusting comments create a backlash.

How do I know? Because I am essentially not an extremist although I am nationalistic. But your comments elicit extremist reactions in me. You are like a person who delights in pouring oil on on an out of control fire.

            Case in point:
            FROM THE ARTICLE –
“Prime Minister Netanyahu said discrimination won’t be tolerated, while Minister of the Economy Naftali Bennett said that 99.9% percent of Israeli Arab citizens are loyal (read: reliable cheap labor).”

MANIC:”- Hypocrisy is the glue that unites the GoI. Build your own fucking houses assholes!!”

            In other words …

Heads: we lose because we are racists if we refuse to employ Arabs.

Tails: we lose because if we do employ Arabs we exploit them.

Go fix up your own country Marnie the best you can do with us is elicit anger and anger is not good when conflicts need to be resolved. Is that what you want? Because if you do, you ain’t helping your Saint-Palestinians, trust me!

            Reply to Comment
          • You are responsible for your actions. I wish the Palestinians would refuse to work in any sector but they’re hurting enough as it is. For me it’s not this at all –
“Heads: we lose because we are racists if we refuse to employ Arabs.
Tails: we lose because if we do employ Arabs we exploit them.”

Oh such self-indulgent self-pity. I look pray for the day they no longer are under the bootheels of the state of Israel and the day they are too busy building their own homes and cities to even look your way. Then you all can get out and build your own houses, clean them and clean the streets while your at it but, hold the phone…. there’s thousands of asylum seeking Africans, known affectionately by the locals as “intruders”, right under your noses. Free labor! Well, a good deal anyway, nobody to protect them and they’ll work for next to nothing just to stay on this patch of dirt right?

Ok we get it Manic. In your opinion, Arabs have built all our houses and we would be lost without them.

I am still wiping tears off my face, you made me laugh so much. Quite a few of you who post here live in a bubble. I already encountered a bubble boy now you can be his companion bubble girl.

Arab media is full of calls to murder Jewish children, men and women and glorifies those who do, but this writer shows her bias by only mentioning Jews who want to take steps to protect themselves from out of control violence but badly express their views.

Talk about reaching for straws. What infantile logic you just spewed.

Even if it were true, which it isn’t as they are censored ( HRW highlighted this )- just because they do it doesn’t mean you can.

This website highlights life in Israel, not life in the Arab world.

By pointing out something that occurs in Israel, it doesn’t automatically mean that anyone is saying that there are no issues in the Arab world.

Everyone is aware of the extremists in the Arab world and the problems that come out of there.

Less people are aware of the extremists that exist in Jewish and Israeli society.
This website chooses to highlight that.

If you would like to see items about Arab anti-semitism, there are many other news sources you can go read.

Now, you’re going to reply to me by saying that by 972 not showing the vitriol in the Arab world while showing stories from extremist Israelis, they are not being “fair” or “balanced” and not showing the complete story.

That’s too bad. You can start your own blog somewhere that reports the stories from that region in the most perfectly balanced way you see fit, calling attention to each act on one side and then showing one from the other.

Until you do that, quit your whining and complaining around here.

“Now, you’re going to reply to me by saying that by 972 not showing the vitriol in the Arab world”

Vitriol? Is that all it is? Vitriol?

And here I was thinking terrorism, intransigence, nationalism, supremacism, racism against minorities and endless wars against anyone, Arab or non Arab.

That in turn puts a bit of perspective on why some of us behave the way we behave as opposed to making it appear as if we are just blood sucking vampires who enjoy tearig off the wings of flies and eating children for breakfast.

Just sayin’ so in my posts. Sorry to upset your world-view by trying to introduce a bit of balance and context to it.

I didn’t mean to sound like a bigoted SOB, I just didn’t couldn’t remember the word I wanted to say, I can’t help it, the question caught me off guard, I don’t say what I mean but I definitely mean what I say, baby I was born this way? Can’t wait for Bennett or Bugsy to use that!

    4. I really look forward to the day when Palestinians are building their own lives, homes, cities, towns, etc., building their infrastructure, commerce, etc., and are completely free of the state of Israel; no longer a master/slave or occupier/occupied status, but equal to it in stature and even better.

“I really look forward to the day when Palestinians are building their own lives, homes, cities, towns, etc.”

The day that comes would mean that they would no longer be aiming to make war on us as they have for the last 100 years because they would be too busy building a life for themselves and their children.

Right now, they are too busy trying to destroy what we built. That has been their tragedy for a very long time. No perspective about what would be their real self interest and being driven by ultra nationalistic, supremacist stupidity.

Just another Mairav hit piece against Israeli society. Posters? Don’t care. Keep cranking these out and maybe a few more will make it into the NYTimes. They’ve got two up today (about yeshivas and conversion) so the appetite for anti-Jewish material is clearly growing. Good business for you to be in.
