Israel: Itamar murderers have been found

According to Israeli media, two Palestinians from the village of Awarta admitted killing five members of the Fogel family a month ago

This text was updated.

According to unconfirmed reports from a rightist Israeli site, the Israeli army has two Palestinian suspects in custody,  Amjed Awad and Hakim Awad, who have confessed to the brutal murder of the Fogel family in the settlement of Itamar last month. The website, claims that the suspects have confessed to murder during interrogation and re-enacted the crime for investigators. These reports are not confirmed, but the Arabic language news site, Ma’an is now carrying the report as well. No detail has been given to how long the two have been in custody or if they had been taken into custody during the last month’s raids in Awarta.

Haaretz reported this morning that the army would release ‘breakthrough’ information about the murder this afternoon. The Israeli army has been quick in recent days to take advantage of the remaining members of the Fogel family for photo opps with the new Israeli army chief of staff, Benny Gantz.

UPDATE: Israeli media has broken the story in Hebrew and it looks like the right wing website got the story correct. This raises an interesting question; why did an extremist right wing settler website know about this story before anyone else in the country?

UPDATE II: This is from Haaretz:

Israeli security forces have arrested two teenage residents of the West Bank Arab village of Awarta for allegedly carrying out last month’s murder of five family members in the settlement of Itamar, the lifting of a gag order revealed on Sunday.

Palestinian students Amjad Awad, 19, and Hakim Awad 18, both admitted to committing the murder.

(…)

An investigation revealed that the two suspects decided that they would carry out the murder on Friday afternoon, hours before the murder was carried out. According to the investigation, the two left Awarta at nine p.m. carrying an umbrella, several knives and wire cutting shears.

According to the Israeli media, four other Palestinians are under arrest for aiding the murderers.

“why did an extremist right wing settler website know about this story before anyone else in the country?”

      I’ll answer that one easly.
every news outlet KNEW about this already for weeks.
The settler site was the first to go public and violate the publicity ban.

    3. Great point. O. Selznik. Naturally, the Israeli government will take the appropriate action against the site for violating the laws of the State.

Richard Silverstein of Seattle, broke the story on his super-“Progressive” web site, Tikun Olam , several days ago.

      • Good point Ben Israel. One note should be added here. Richard Silverstein as an American living in the United States is not subject to an Israeli media gag order. He did nothing wrong according to the state (being a leftist might soon be a crime though) but the settler website did break the law.

Joseph Dana, how comically predictable! Drop the “item” and focus on the speculative crumb 🙂
Nothing to add about the Thai worker? Nothing about what’s expected of the PA? I guess there’s time until the trial ends, much time to find irregularities there…
Or shall we speculate about what would happen were the PA to try the murderers? We know they do apply capital punishment for collaborators – what would be with murderers?

    6. Thanks for the positive comment Max. I will be happy to read more details about the case as they emerge and write a detailed commentary on the murders. In addition to the claims about the Thai worker, I am curious how the Awarta raids, which have terrorized the village for the last month, helped Israel conduct it’s search for the murderers. I am curious when these people were taken in exactly for questioning and their connection with the PFLP. These details should hopefully emerge in the coming days. Last time I checked, in Israel you are innocent until proven guilty (I understand that this principle is usually not applied to Palestinians though). Thus the ‘item’ has not been dropped. Rather, discussion about the ‘item’ is just beginning.

This site is a place for discussion and not insults. If you are unable to engage in discussion with insults, you would be best served on the Jerusalem Post or other sources of information about Israel in English.

      Best

Ha’aretz actually for once used the term “allegedly” in reference to a Palestinian under arrest!

For me, the question is whether there is any real evidence, or if this arrest is just the usual case of who cracked and confessed under torture.

      Reply to Comment
      • That is an interesting point Aristeides. The sad part is that we will likely never know. Those in Israel that thirst for revenge will use this arrest to wash Israel of responsibility for the way it behaved in Awarta and, in a strange way, the placement of the Itamar settlement in the first place. It is a sad circle that repeats itself day after day, year after year.

Joseph Dana, how disingenuous! “This site is a place for discussion and not insults” – where’s the insult? My observation that a post that’s presumably about “murderers have been found” is immediately developing into bashing of a speculative settlers’ site breaking a speculative gag?
Or the fact that just as I wrote – no, I’m not a prophet, here starts the apologetic twist preparing the ground for disqualifying a potential “guilty” verdict?
No insults, just predictable. Sad, because it leaves no space for dialog

      • Max, the post was written before the story had broke in the Israeli media. That is why the structure of the post was the way it was. Look we are having a discussion 🙂 Is this not fun!

    9. The Palestinian Authority has become subject to an intense campaign of delegitimization by pro-Israeli supporters over the past few months, and even more after the Itamar massacre.
The main point against the PA is their still ongoing incitement against Israel and Jews and the glorification of terrorists and martyrs on public television, in the naming of streets, monuments and events.
Many media-watch organization (MEMRI, CAMERA…etc) are at the forefront of these attacks against the PA.
However, how can we truly know what the situation is in regards to PA incitement and glorification of terrorism? Those media-watch organization have a clear anti-Palestinian agenda, and may easily be manipulating the material their publish.
Joseph, what is your opinion in regards to Palestinian incitement?
I rarely agree with the over-simplified, one-sided and racist arguments of the “hasbara” lovers. But given that the material is in Arabic, it is difficult to make a clear opinion for ourselves on this matter.
      Thanks

I’m beginning to understand your dislike of these american progressives , all I asked him today was what was the surprise in answer to his comment
” and what the motives were everyone will be quite surprised. ”
all I got in return was abuse and he banned me from commenting further
he is full of hate for all of us , dont matter to him if we are Left or Right, religious or secular he just does not like us period .

In fact, when news finally breaks about who committed the crime and what the motives were everyone will be quite surprised

      Hi, Kibbutznik,
At least we have something in common-being on Silverstein’s blacklist.
What is interesting was that he was invited by J-Street along with 2 other fellows of similar views to have a symposium on blogging at the previous year’s national conference which leads me to wonder exactly what J-Street means when they say they are “pro-Israel”.

Raphael, there’re several places where you can find info about both Jewish-Israeli and Palestinian education systems. See for example http://www.speroforum.com/a/42167/ISRAEL–PALESTINE—Israeli-and-Palestinian-children-not-educated-to-love and the links you can find from it, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institute_for_Monitoring_Peace_and_Cultural_Tolerance_in_School_Education, http://www.impact-se.org/research/pa/index.html (see alo their part on Israel)

I know nothing of J-sreet or of American Progressives , i’m very much left wing and secular but like you I do a lot of reading on-line including Richard Silverstein’s blog and he called us all racists at one point and that was enough for me
we need to sort out our own mess without the diaspora , they dont understand us and they never will

This ones great. It magnificently illustates the Israeli penchant for identifying a problem, and then self-prescribing colo-rectal examinations. Comparing the Israeli school system to the Palestinian one on the face of it, is laughable. You think those palestinian kids living in some sh*thole in aza need some teacher or some text book to tell them to hate you?

    17. I did publish news of the arrest of the Awad teenagers three days ago, but my report was based on one from Maan. It’s important to note that Shabak & IDF disagree on the motives for the crime with Deutsche Presse quoting an IDF officer by name as saying the original motive was gun theft & not murder.

As for the rest of the lashon hara here, Kibbutznik was not banned from my comment threads. He uses multiple IP addresses to comment and I couldn’t ban him even if I wanted to. Nor would I ban someone truly on the left unless they expressed a wish for Israel to be destroyed.

However, he did make rather foolish claims such as “most of the Israel right” comes from America, and that the Israeli left is a viable opposition force in Israeli politics. Not to mention denying the results of multiple Israeli polls which find racism rampant among Israeli Jews.

Ben Israel didn’t use this nickname at my blog so I can’t know for sure who he is, but I believe he’s the same person who claimed Arab culture was inferior to Israeli & western culture, which is racist & a violation of my comment rules. And after being warned about this violation & repeating it several times not to mention other similar racist cant, he was banned.

    18. Actually I don’t think the PA has any authority in the case. Because the crime took place in the settlement, the boys will be tried by Israeli courts according to Israeli law.

You see, thats the problem with the left. They’ve divided the world into white hats and black hats. While I’m sure this Baader-Meinhof worldview goes down a treat on Sheinkin,in Greenwich Village and Montmartre, its bullsh*t nonetheless. What we’re seeing now is the final epeisode of the mini-series known as the Hegelian Dialectic, where axioms, ideologies and -isms are meaningless. Where the pricipal players are swimming in their own feces pretending that the other guy just passed wind.

Brownie points for Shoded for the LOTR quote.

Dannecker, insanity isn’t a defense. Was Eichmann insane? I think so. But that doesn’t make him any less guilty. Unless their neurotransmitters are completely out of whack, they are simply human. We got to accept that humans can do the worst of the worst and that they should be held accountable no matter if they grew up in an occupation, or in a villa.

He is likely jealous of my success as founder onf NewJudaism, which revolutionized last years J Street meeting by getting J Street U by dropping pro-israel from its Pro Peace moniker. I, unlike “Shoded Yam” am not afraid to use my name, perhaps because I dont have to worry about being extradited to the Hague for serving in the IOF
