I was flying to Madrid that day, and guess I was in the air en-route to or just landed at Standstead when events began to unfold.

We got as far as departures for the connection, where we were stranded with the looping footage of the second plane, and (my clearest memory) a couple of men falling to their deaths--having presumably lept as the better option.

Watching was a case of holding back tears at what was horrific and heart-rending, while at the same time (well aware by that time that nothing is ever sacred where foreign policy (or just politics) is concerned, and of the US's record at proving it) filled with absolute foreboding as to 1) what a US "response" might entail, and 2) what it would mean for Palestinians, given the immediatly obvious way Israel could capitalize from such an event*.

Of the first, well we can all see those horrors.

Of the second, Sharon's official reaction & Netanyahu's unguarded one said it all; with-in a day the IMFA website already had at least two new essays up talking about the inroads al-Qaeda was making in Gaza and the refugee camps of Lebanon (internet was all I had to do, waiting a day and a half for my flight, btw!).

* Note, I am well aware that Israel is far from the only country that sought to capitalize in this way; I was fairly focused on the Palestinian cause at that time, having gone through a very rude five year awakening on I/P (initially prompted by an Israeli official I heard speak making what seemed an outrageously racist remark about Palestinians, and going completely unchallenged on it).

Ex - There is nothing in Becca's comment that merited your rude response. Cool it, please.

I Missed?
Ok, I just stopped to buy few things at the supermarket before coming home from work.
Sorry, but I can’t remember what exactly did I buy there. It was probably milk and eggs and something for dinner. Possibly a french baguette as well. Or maybe 1kg bag of basmati rice? I am so very sorry I but I honestly can't remember any more details regarding the moment I heard about it.

Now that I shared this info, does this makes you feel somewhat better, Becca?

That day I was lying down to take the sun. My brother called me at phone told me for that attack.
I didn't realize what really was going to happen, but my first idea was simple: someone have opened the gates of hell.
And that was the truth!

I also remember clearly where I was on 9/11 though I wasn't aware of the World Trade Center attack at the time being.
I had an appointment with a professor of mine, a Chilean who had spent many years in Pinochet's prisons before leaving the country crippled by the torture.
We always talked about Chile - where a part of my family lives - before getting to the serious stuff, and that day he asked me 'do you know what day it is today ?'. I had completely forgotten that the fall of Allende and the bombing of La Moneda was on a 9/11.
That gave another perspective to the images I later discovered on the television, and I have to admit that my first thoughts were something like "He who sows the wind reaps the storm": cf. the implications of the CIA in the economical destabilization of Chile and the fall of Allende, the first democratically elected socialist president of Latin America.
May the Palestinians remember the wise words from Chile: "Un pueblo unido jamàs serà vencido"

ex-israeli, I think you've missed the point of this post.
How about sharing where you were on that day?

I was still at school, but I remember getting on the school bus and watching tv, a it suddenly dawning on me that this would probably be the defining historical moment of my life time.
