If anyone's interested in a very readable account of the whole situation/personalities/events surrounding Sykes-Picot, a terrific book is "The Peace to End All Peace" by David Fromkin.

I don't think we can refer to the actions of the colonial powers as a conspiracy - it was all policy, all on record, more or less. And 'conspiracy' indicates a singularity of purpose - agreement of general principles. There seems to be precious little of that in the inter-war period. Just sayin'

And to L Michael D - I don't think that Lieberman has any idea at all how to win elections - he must have very little idea, otherwise he would never say the ridiculous things he does.

OK. Lieberman speaks not to you and me. He started his election and speaks to his electorate. He isn't a doorman. He can win elections, the only thing he knows how to do well. And he does this.
