I have read Aziz for some time, and have no doubt he will explain what this offered largesse of citizenship onto a new generation really entails.

"If I choose to live abroad for a while, I am not allowed to come back." : This is abominable to true citizenship, which is a fundamental check on the State. Citizenship should not be offered to those born under self-declared annexed rule but mandatorily acknowledged by a democratic State; let residents refuse it if they wish.

"The archaeologist is busy analyzing stones.

"In the rubble of legends"

Citizenship is not of the past but present. Stories should not define citizenship; existence should, must. All other routes lead to disaster.

This article is pretty offensive. He can get citizenship if he chooses to as all residents in Jerusalem can. He has chosen not to because he probably doesn't want to accept Israel. Typical they want citizenship forced on them so they complain about yet another thing. Also residents can and do vote in municipal elections this is just more propaganda

Citizenship was offered in both Jerusalem and the Golan directly after the areas were annexed to Israel.
At the time this offer was rejected/ignored for political reasons.
Over a period of time the offer has just disappeared, and does not really exist anymore.

@Haifawi,
Palestinians in East Jerusalem were never offered citizenship. It is an Israeli myth. The process to get such citizenship is ridiculous and often you need lawyers to get it done. However, I will leave it for now and promise to write something on the topic very soon.

beautiful. Thank you Aziz. And Liel. Yesterday I considered calling my friend from East Jerusalem whose values I trust completely to offer to vote for her, which is different than going through Real Democracy and voting for a stranger (an initiative I also support). In the end, I felt too strongly about my candidate, but maybe in the next election, if I'm here, I'll make this choice. We'll see. Meanwhile, bravo. And thank you for this piece, Aziz.

There's a process you can go through (with liberal amounts of time and money) to get Israeli citizenship. My friend recently did that. Also, after 1967, Israel offered citizenship to the annexed population but was rebuffed. Obviously the current regime is terrible, but context matters.

Thanks for the article Aziz, it makes many good points and I really support your aspirations. What I think would make it even better is some analysis of the reasons why Israel behaves as it does, from the perspective of those in power. I think that by acknowledging these reasons, people like yourself will get more support from others who live in Israel but currently oppose your position since they think you don't understand their concerns. I'm thinking mainly about fear and lack of trust.
