I think Gideon Levy had a point that ordinary Israelis will have to get a hell of a lot angrier for the protests to achieve genuine change. There's something very goody-two-shoes about most of them.

Thanks for good reporting on the diversity of this demonstration, Arab, elderly, young people, working together to build a common future. Regarding the numbers game: I have no idea how many there were actually as I'm not in Israel. But for some obscure reason Haaretz always gives lower numbers than Ynet or JPost. Just compare former demonstrations. Also I get the impression that some people at the left want this movement to be stopped. I dont quite get why ? Read Gideon Levi http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/a-passionless-protest-at-tel-aviv-s-rabin-square-1.392661 and http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/opinion/israel-s-social-protest-leader-is-now-her-own-worst-enemy-1.392399. I dont agree with them.

Thanks, Roee. The man with the "Occupy Tel Aviv, not Palestine" sign has proven me wrong (which is good; I like to be proven wrong at least once a day). The Occupy Wall Street people have given us a way to address the occupation with language that won't attract only the far left! At first, I was upset about the wall street movement's choice of this word, but now I get it! I'm heading over to Yares's thread to suggest this for coordinated Is/Pal demos: Israelis and Palestinians Occupy Ourselves for social justice. Or something like that.... I really do believe that joint (coordinated) demonstrations are crucial, generally, and that the J14 movement has made them possible.

Ahh yes, the numbers game. It's always bit tricky. At the rally, organizers announced there were 70,000 people. JPost reports 45,000 people. Ha'aretz says 20,000 people. I'm not sure why the big discrepancy. Perhaps the latter two are actually just counting the people in the actual square ... though many people lingered in all the closed off sections of Ibn Gvirol towards HaBima.
