@Asaf :)--I ended up living here, in the Negev, after a series of unexpected events, perhaps beginning at Rachel's grave, when I was traveling around without a plan. It's much harder to be an explorer in the place you come from; that one reason people love travel. Also of course it's harder when you have a family, certain kinds of responsibilities. But, you *can* be an explorer in your own home, just by making fewer plans, setting forth, talking to strangers, looking for signs about where you're meant to be next. You can do it in your daily life--go a different way--and you can also just take a day or two to travel. Also, maybe you wouldn't be comfortable walking across unmarked borders into Area A, but I have Israeli friends who've gone with Palestinians they know to Ramallah, Bethlehem, on the roads (yes, roads) without check points, or without strict ones. They weren't activists; they just wanted to see, and they loved their experience, especially getting over their own fears. We can't all be Yuval, (that's what we have Yuval for! ;) ) but as we've recently been reminded, when we set off into uncharted territory, seas part... Nessiya tova, and thanks for your name.

Thank you for opening my eyes to the Israel they don't show you in the travel books. I have booked 3 different tour guides when I have visited Israel and your journey has been the most fascinating - a rainbow of colours.

@Dhalgren and @Tamar--you guys are good.
@A--I appreciate your comment, and I'm wondering (I'm sure I'd know if I could specifically recall your previous comments--I only recall appreciating them): are you Israeli? Palestinian?
@Yuval--I have to admit, here and while reading your previous journeys, I get sad when you hide your Israeli identity. I don't' blame you. I know (I guess) that it's necessary, mostly to keep you on the journey vs. arrested. But it makes me sad anyway, because so many people on this land have never met each other outside of conflict, and media and government portrayals, and because I really wonder how it would go down if you told. I have this feeling most Palestinians would be more interested in you as Yuval than Greg. (hilarious name choice, btw. love it). Journey on!

@ Dhalgren
Eeek! I haven't thought of those Keane paintings in ages.

@Yuval
Any idea why the Raba twins were dressed up? Festival? Birthday? Wedding party? Other?

@TammyTamar
Good call. Maybe a touch of Margaret Keane in the expressions too. I surely hope they haven't seen The Shining, but hopefully they get the chance to somewhere down the line.

These two lines cracked me up:

(1) "the land of sour milk and pigeon turds" and

(2) "She’s newly in love with a man who has every possible virtue but one: He does not live in Israel."

Dhalgren sees the twins channeling Stanley Kubrick, and I am thinking, instead, Diane Arbus.

The last pic of the twin girls in the dresses freaked me out at first, but that's Stanley Kubrick's fault (maybe the ghostly "Shalom" part of the story too). I like the "you are there" perspective in the tea-drinking picture too. Thanks for being our surrogate on this journey, Yuval, er, Greg.

I've never been more envy of a travel in my life. You experience our land in a way that I (sadly) can only dream of.
