Further proof that as interesting as the geographic landscape can be, the human landscape (peoplescape?) will always be the most interesting. There have been so many fascinating perspectives on this journey, and yet still there are surprisingly new and thought-provoking ones, from Yinon's skeptical gaze to the spirited fellowship of Baba Sali's followers. Glad to hear the head injury wasn't serious too, as those are never to be taken lightly, although it does appear to have elicited a dry humor in this piece that I appreciate. The soup looks good too.

Maybe the IFCJ can use that picture of Yuval on the stretcher for their next poster. :)

I just re-read the part in question. It didn't raise a flag for me in the first place because I found the background on who funds that hospital really interesting (I heard it here first), and I didn't hear Yuval demonizing those donors, but, rather, the system. Upon second read: more or less same response. What I'm hearing is that Yuval is criticizing the entire system by which Israel gets by, socio-economically, as well as the moral implications. He is not the first to do so. Here, he is highlighting how the government leans on donations from evangelical christians whom Israel is manipulating. That 60 minutes interview also on 972 is pretty solid proof of the machine at work. Does that make the christian donors bad people? mamash lo. Does that make donating money to a hospital in a poor town, bad? of course not. We could ask ourselves, too, if it's bad to throw money at hunger in Africa, and of course the answer would be: no. But are we often feeding corrupt governmental systems while feeling we're doing good? Yes. Based on your politics, Caden, I'm guessing you'd agree, there. (context not parallel--making a specific point about well-meaning aid and corrupt governments. at least, here, the money actually went to the hospital, and the hospital actually serves people). I hear Yuval asking Israel to take care for her own--*all* of her own. The corruption in the system was exposed by J14, albeit with different focusses. This focus, too, is not only interesting, but profound, since it is about much more than one hospital. There are so many humans--on so many sides--coming from good, passionate places around this conflict, while inadvertently sustaining exactly what they wish to fight.

Ayala, I'm a fan of the travelogue, I really am. But I thought that was a totally out of line shot at good people who donated a hospital wing that personally helped him. And I'm surprised at you too on this.

favorite lines: "broken pot of a country" and: “The man who is buried here is one of the pillars of this world.” explains Yehuda. “Have some grilled sheep liver.”
*
oh, to reinstate the Petra-Gaza Spice Route. Even more idyllic than Perez's original plans for Kvi Shesh/highway six, which, by the way, I learned of here.

Caden--that's so sweet! The thing you're missing is that the people helping Israel blindly--and everyone understands that they believe they're doing good--are not actually helping Israel, nor anyone. Quite the contrary. And it's not their fault for not knowing the fuller story; this is how the story is reported. The way the story is reported from the other side is no more whole. Underneath the news is the story. Which is why we love Yuval's journey. You like it when it serves your beliefs. I liked the whole thing.

I noticed that myself. If the politics of the IFCJ offends him so much he should have skipped the hospital and let his brain explode. Better that then to be somehow helped by evil pro-Israel Christians from America.

Why slam IFCJ for helping a hospital where you yourself were helped? The government does not have unlimited funds, and the costs to protect itself are high.
