1) "After walking alongside Umm Jihad in her moments of sweet nostalgia, I would have been friendly towards Pol Pot," made me laugh really hard.
2) I just got home from a day along the Nabatean Spice Route between Petra and Gaza, so I've been in a lot of caves today. To cement a cave is a a grave act of disrespect not only against the human dweller, but against the cave herself.
3) Abraham and Sarah!
3) Yuval--the Adventure and Beauty gods are on your side. They are no fools. This post is perfection.

The story of Umm Jihad is very touching, especially when paired with the picture of her in the barley with her arms outstretched in wonderment. It's interesting how Tine's illustrations shift the focus of your accounts to the perceptual. This actually seemed to blend well while reading it with the images of the paradoxical "Forest of the German States" sign, the extremist signs and symbols, and the fact that the two major personal experiences (Umm Jihad's and Abraham's) depend very much on their way of seeing the world (for Umm Jihad memory came to life and for Abraham the Torah defines life). Really, the world is not a single theater, but rather there are as many theaters and as many directors as there are human minds capable of experience.

Ah, you are one of those persons who think JI means 'holy', and HAD means 'war'!

Jihad means 'exertion' or 'struggle'. In Islam there is the concept of the 'big jihad', which refers to the struggle against evil urges inside yourself, and there is the concept of the 'small jihad', which is the struggle against evils outside of yourself. This can take all kinds of forms, such as social activism, but also war.

The concept of the 'just war' by the way, is not limited to Islam.

Finally, where did you get this from?

"According to their beliefs Jews are justified in killing any German they might find based on past injustices."

"Their" beliefs or "your" beliefs? And so telling that you think this bloodlust should only affect "left wing" Germans!! (Because Nazism was a left-wing ideology, right?)

Yuval, just to say how much your way of looking contributes to understanding - and to appreciate how the drawings allied with the photos contribute to ways of looking. Love it.

K9 you're a real clown who never misses the chance of a trick. The root of the word jihad means effort and the word itself means struggle, not necessarily armed. You'd need to add a qualifier to make it mean that, just as you do in the expression armed struggle.
Not that I think you're in the least bit interested in correcting your misperceptions,

.
According to their beliefs Jews are not permitted to cut down a single fruit tree or transgress the Shabat (to slug someone with a gun). But they do, wearing tzitzit and kipa, all the time. As for killing anyone, look no further than the 10 commandments. But why bother? Your last sentence stands as a monument to who you really are.

Oh look at that, a lovely peaceful woman who named her eldest son 'Islamic holy war'.
.

Left wing Germans should be uncomfortable in Israel. According to their beliefs Jews are justified in killing any German they might find based on past injustices.
