Some 400 protesters gathered in Tel Aviv Saturday night to protest against the war in Gaza, calling for an end to the blockade of the Strip and the Israeli occupation in general. The protest was organized by the the Coalition of Women for Peace and the socialist Da'am Workers Party. The protest was set to take place in Habima Square in central Tel Aviv, however police prevented the demonstration from taking place there and moved it to a nearby street. During the protest a rocket was fired from Gaza toward Tel Aviv and intercepted by the Iron Dome. The protesters chanted…Read More... | 6 Comments
Under a coalition of Israeli left-wing political parties and organizations, thousands gathered in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square in the largest anti-war demonstration since the outbreak of violence in Gaza. (Moriel Rothman-Zecher and Haggai Matar contributed to this report) Some 10,000 Israelis flooded Tel Aviv's Rabin Square under the slogan “Changing direction: toward peace, away from war” in the largest anti-Gaza war demonstration in Israel since the outbreak of hostilities more than one month ago. The protest was scheduled to take place last week, but was postponed after the police and Home Front Command revoked its permit, ostensibly to stop large gatherings during…Read More... | 63 Comments
Before a scheduled 72-hour ceasefire collapsed early Friday, Gazan residents tried to use the time to collect possessions, as well as the bodies of loved ones buried under rubble. Photos by: Anne Paq and Basel Yazouri/Activestills.org As the death toll in Gaza topped 1,500, hundreds of residents returned to the southern Gaza Strip village of Khuza'a, hoping to make use of an announced 72-hour ceasefire to collect bodies and salvage possessions. Khuza'a has been cut off from the rest of Gaza and occupied by Israeli soldiers since attacks began there more than a week ago. A large number of residents…Read More... | 1 Comment
The world expects millions of people in Gaza and the West Bank to happily and quietly live under occupation. While laying down arms is a positive step towards peace, it is not enough to end this conflict. Written with Dr. Marc Gopin In the past few weeks the pro-Israel pundits have been recycling an argument that runs as follows: If Palestinians were to lay down their guns tomorrow, there would be no war. If Israel were to lay down its arms, there would be no Israel. This argument is based on two false assumptions about Palestinians. The first statement is…Read More... | 51 Comments
A video posted Tuesday by Al Arabiya shows the destruction of the Gaza neighborhood of Beit Hanoun in one hour. According to the Israeli army, residents are given at least three minutes to evacuate their homes before they are bombed. (In some cases, Gazans are given a 24-hour notice to evacuate the entire neighborhood.) Watching this video, I couldn't help but wonder whether those three minutes would be enough to escape this kind of attack. I don't think so. This video reflects the reality of civilian life in Gaza. Israel claims that Hamas is using schools, hospitals, beaches and mosques…Read More... | 25 Comments
The bickering between countries over who has the right to negotiate over the Palestinians is nothing new. We've been here before. By Aziz Abu Sarah and Dr. Marc Gopin There are two main camps involved in negotiating a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel. However, the players are not within the camp that most would have expected. What started as Israel vs. Hamas is quickly becoming a geopolitical issue involving many new actors. While this might seem good for some, it should be seen as terrible news for Palestinians and Israelis alike. Israel, Egypt and the PLO seem to be…Read More... | 5 Comments

As talk of a ceasefire raises hopes, Israel's strikes on Gaza continue to raise the death toll and destroy family homes. Photos by: Anne Paq and Basel Yazouri/Activestills.org Text by: Ryan Rodrick Beiler With international attention focused on the suffering of civilians in Gaza, pressure has mounted on both sides to agree to a ceasefire. Meanwhile, those on the ground continue to suffer the most. Thousands of Gazans fled the northern region of the strip after receiving warnings from the Israeli military of impending attacks. While many have sought shelter in schools, Israeli strikes continue to claim lives throughout the…Read More... | 5 Comments
Sorting through the propaganda war. The main outrage now, in the fourth day (Friday) of Operation Protective Edge, as Israel calls it, is the rising number of killings of Palestinian civilians by Israeli airstrikes, mainly as a result of attacks on residential buildings where militants live or are thought to live. Haaretz reported that the Palestinian Health Ministry said that of the 86 Gazans killed by Wednesday night, most were children (22), women (15) and the elderly (12). And that didn’t count the five members, at least, of the Ghaneem family in Rafah who were killed when their four-story building,…Read More... | 36 Comments
Using a multi-pronged strategy, the army spokesperson's office launched a full social media assault via YouTube, Flickr, Facebook and Twitter, with the latter in English, Hebrew, Arabic, French and Spanish. No word yet on the tumblr blog, though. In what is possibly a social media precedent, the Israeli army spokesperson's office (@idfspokesperson) today announced a military action against Gaza — on Twitter. This came shortly after the IDF announced — again on Twitter — that that the Israeli Air Force had assassinated senior Hamas operative Hamas military chief Ahmed al-Jaabari. The responses came in immediately, from various sources and in…Read More... | 3 Comments
