Before making aliya I went to ulpan in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ulpan was run by Bene-Aqibbah members on mission in Russia. Those were the years when hundreds of thousands of Jews left Russia for their historical home, Israel. So Bene Aqibbah run ulpanim in all major cities of the former USSR. Evert once in a while, Israeli or American guys and girls came to St. Petersburg and I was their guide because I had some command of English. Once two guys came from Riga - they were Bene Aqibbah messengers there. Their names wete Yigal and Avinoam. And I made a tour in magnificent St. Petersburg for them. We never talked about politics. Only once when I met a friend of mine who was an editor of an anarchist newspaper. He said: oh, I see the guys are from Israel. We just wrote an article on elections in Israel, you know, there, the leftists won. Here it is, translate them. So I translated the title of the article: Israelis Made a Right Choice. Yigal said: no. Wrong choice. This is all he said about the politics. He was a clever guy, curious about Russia and St. Petersburg, it was interesting to talk with him. The next days we went to the duburbs and saw Tzar's summer palaces. And then the guys left for Riga.
When I came to Israel, I called Yigal and he picked me from kibbutz and we went to Jerusalem. He was the one to show me Jerusalem for the first time.
Later, I lost connection with him. Only once I saw him from the bus window going to a right wing demo. It was time of Oslo process, of Palestinian suicide terror and of the large right wing and left wing rallies.
One day I went to a bar in the Russian compound with my friends. On the way to the bar I heard the news in the bus: a right wing fanatic just shot and injured the Israeli PM. Then we sat at the bar and the waitor came and said: we are closing. Rabin was murdered. I said: no, he was just injured. But the waitor said: he succumbed to his wounds.
When I came back to the University dorms, I went to the TV and was surprised to discover that the murderer is none else than my friend Yigal.
Few years ago, when Yigal's wife struggled for the right to conceive a child from her husband, I wrote in her Russian language blog that even though I strongly disagree with all Yigal's opinions, even though I most certainly condemn political terrorism (though it is less disgusting than indiscriminate mass murder), I still think that the human rights are for all and that if other murderers have conjugal visits, it's a shame and a human rights violation to deny this right from Yigal Amir. I added that I knew Yigal in Russia. The next day, Larissa, Yigal's wife, responded: are you that Shlomo, who walked with Yigal in St. Petersburg? I told hom about your comment in my blog by phone and he sends you dash ham (best regards).

He represents Israeli consensus nowadays. Most Israeli Jews see him as a hero. Kahana is already considered too moderate for many of them. It won't be surprising when he'll find a comfortable spot in the next Knesset.
