I'm neither a Jew nor an Arab, nor did I grow up with any kind of religion...but I've always had the impression that the Jews were chosen by God as well.

Not that their lives may be "worth" more...but God chose them for a great purpose and a greater destiny.

Great op-ed. But I'm fine with panicking about numerous things, not just one.

A fascinating coda to this discussion in today's Haaretz from Meirav Michaeli:
"Haaretz appeared to be gripped by panic after the Guttman Center-Avi Chai Foundation poll on religion came out last week, as could be seen in the frenzied front-page headline in Friday's paper: "Survey finds record number of Israeli Jews believe in God." But the newspaper wasn't panicking about the right thing."

AK, I apologize for saying that you loathe the people you described in the article. I made the exact same mistake that I called you on elsewhere: attributing thoughts or feelings to people based on no evidence. That was a low trick, reaching for a cute Hunter S. Thompson phrase, and I shouldn't have done it. I do stand by the inference that you apparently fear them (collectively). I think that's a reasonable inference from the words you wrote. It isn't necessarily a negative or irrational thing, either: it's arguable that they should be feared.

That I think both the religious and the agnostics and disbelievers need to do some work.

@Ami - "Now that the believers are the majority, I think the ball is in their court. The “burden of proof” so to say, that they will accept agnostics and “disbelievers” is on them. It’s time they take responsibility, now that they’ve “won”."
.
That's an interesting take. A friend from one of the two Arab countries that have had their first fair and free election said exactly the same to me today.

@Aaron - "There are those who can’t imagine believing both that God gave the Torah, including the commandment not to drive to the beach on shabbat, and also thinking it’s OK to drive to the beach on shabbat."
There's a commandment that reads thou shalt not drive to the beach on shabbat? So far as I know all 10 commandments came down from a mountain, with nary a mention in them of beaches or motor cars.
.
True I could and maybe should have said that the distinction between Ashkenaz and Sfard was less rigid than people claim but as you know, in Israel we tend to chop everything and everybody up into separate slots. I've heard Mizrahim call Ashkenazim white and Ashkenazim calling Mizrahim black but seen quite a few pale, blue or grey-eyed Mizrahim with blond hair and raven-haired, dark Ashkenazim, hence the overreaction.
