Hey Lisa,
If Palestinians had not summoned the Arab world to cross UN lines and attack Israel and if the collective effort to slaughter all Jews and turn Israel into an Islamic state had not failed, there would be no "occupation."
Also, there was no checkpoint at Hizmeh before 2003. Palestinian terrorists from the W. Bank coming into Israel to kill people is the reason the checkpoint is there now. There will be no change until Palestinians can learn to express their grievances peacefully.

I just wonder, why are those activists so desperate to prove the unprovable? That Israel is an apartheid society? Could it be propaganda? That is not the way to find a solution to the problems. That is not the way to peace.
.
If only they would put as much energy into doing a bit of soul searching and look into history, asking themselves, how and why we reached this low point and what can each side do about it? Maybe, just maybe, reasonable compromise solutions would be found that would give the Palestinian Arabs most (not everything) of what THEY want without requiring Israelis to become subservient in the process. Reasonable solutions exist but that involves giving up zero sum games.

Ariella - The activists were stopped at Hizmeh and refused the right to continue into Pisgat Zeev, which is in occupied East Jerusalem - which is part of the West Bank, which is part of Palestine. Therefore, the activists were forbidden to travel from one part of their putative state to another. Which makes your comment, to borrow your charming phrase, "total BS."

This article is total b.s., as are the protagonists in this charade. There are NO segregated buses, either in Israel or Judea/Samaria/WB. The 'activists' boarded freely. However, as they did not have the proper permits to cross from Judea/Samaria/WB into Israel, they were not allowed to cross.

Every country restricts non-citizens from entering. The 'activists' could have obtained the correct paperwork, but did not. This is not particular to Israel, but occurs in every nation in the world.

I agree that the situation is different from Apartheid and the Black Civil Rights Movement in the US, given that security concerns do play a part in restricting Palestinians' freedom of movement in the occupied territories. HOWEVER, if Israel were to disengage from the West Bank and a part of East Jerusalem and proper security measures were put in place with international help, this would create a much more secure future for Israel and an acceptable solution to Palestinian grievances.

It's not necessary to like or even sympathise with the actions of Palestinian activists to see that ultimately, this makes sense. If your primary concern is security, there are better solutions, long term, than the current one. If your primary concern is the Jewish right to control Judea and Samaria and endlessly harass the Palestinians living there in order to manage the security issues resulting from this, don't pretend you actually care about the safety of Israelis - it doesn't add up.

Journalist Haggai Segal of the Makor Rishon newspaper happened to be on the bus. He has a photo of the "protestors" waiting for the bus at Pesagot surrounnded by a lot of photographers and newsmen. This crowd was the majority of riders. The whole thing was a circus (sounds like all the stories we hear of 'poor pathetic Palestinian farmers who are confronted by evil settlers' while the 'farmer' is surrounded by reporters and NGO do-gooder activists). The reporters went to all the Jewish riders and shoved microphones in their faces trying to elicit "racist comments". One Jewish rider suggested they go to an Arab town and ask passersby what they think of Jews and Israel.

What we see here is that since the Palestinian Authority (and HAMAS, of course) refuse to negotiate with Israel, they and their supporters, including the Israeli "progressives" are reduced to carrying out pathetically transparent media stunts to try to get sympathy from the "progressives" fo the world. Rosa Parks was really endangering herself and the real "Freedom Riders" faced brutal violence. These "heroes" who got on the bus knowing nothing would happen to them are nothing more than a bunch of losers.

Take your mind back to 2002. Now fast forward to today. What's happened? The intifada is over and the wall has stopped terrorism. Their leaders were instrumental in bombings, not to mention that they could have had a state by now. To compare these people to Rosa Parks is a joke. Furthermore, their goal is the destruction of Israel, its not a separate state, they are just finding new ways to go about this ultimate goal (which will fail).
