And yet Israel is easily the closest thing to a true democracy in that entire region of Earth. Yet gets bashed far more, unfairly for how they deal with crazy people who want to wipe Israel out. Go figure.

So that’s your scale for measuring Israel’s democracy – it’s more democratic than Syria? That may be true, but I’d like Israel to be benchmarked against the likes of Canada, Norway, the U.K. and France. Even in the U.S., where administrative detention has been employed against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, the consensus is for closing down Gitmo, which eventually it will. Will Israel ever close down its administrative detention program? I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Is this really all you can think of to say in response to the plight of people who can be detained indefinitely and shackled to a bed without even a charge, let alone a trial? Without being given automatic access to a lawyer? With no legal rights at all? This, preceded by, “It’s all OK – they’re even worse next door in Syria!”?
