Israeli-Iranian solidarity exchange sweeps Facebook

On Saturday night, an Israeli couple – two graphic designers named Ronnie Edri and Michal Tamir –  decided to cut across the growing anxiety and fear over the possibility of an Israel-Iran war, and address Iranian citizens directly. They created a slogan you can impose over your profile picture or any picture of your choice:

The Israeli meme nation is a harsh and biting one, and many of the first responses were on the cynical side:

But more and more Israelis took up the call in earnest,

and some added messages of their own; as these are also being enthusiastically copied and reproduced, it’s hard to establish authorship, but one of the more popular ones ran:

To the Iranian people
To all the fathers, mothers, children, brothers and sisters

For there to be a war between us, first we must be afraid of each other, we must hate.
I’m not afraid of you, I don’t hate you.
I don t even know you. No Iranian ever did me no harm. I never even met an Iranian…Just one in Paris in a museum. Nice dude.

I see sometime here, on the TV, an Iranian. He is talking about war.
I’m sure he does not represent all the people of Iran.
If you see someone on your TV talking about bombing you …be sure he does not represent all of us.

I’m not an official representative of my country. I’m a father and a teacher. I know the streets of my town, I talk with my neighbors, my family, my students, my friends and in the name of all these people …we love you.
We mean you no harm.
On the contrary, we want to meet, have some coffee and talk about sports.

To all those who feel the same, share this message and help it reach the Iranian people.

And then came the response:

The couple told “The Marker” they had received hundreds of private messages from Iranians saying they were deeply moved by the campaign.

So what does it all mean? Quite simply, that neither party has any appetite for a war right now. As an Iranian first strike on Israel is not even on the cards right now, Iranian opposition to war may come as no surprise. But it’s important to stress the Israeli opposition to war reflected above is also far from an abstract “make love not war” one. A recent survey found a whopping 50 percent of Israelis were totally opposed to an attack on Iran, even if the diplomatic efforts to stall the nuclear program failed. 43 supported the move, but 78 percent of those surveyed recognised that even a successful attack would at best delay Iran’s acquisition of an A-Bomb by  a few years. Only 16 percent believed such an attack would wipe out the Iranian nuclear program for good. An earlier survey that specifically asked if Israel should attack on Iran on its own found 65 percent of Israelis were opposed.

Although I’m normally very cynical on just how much leaders care for public opinion when making a decision to go to war, we should remember Netanyahu is first and foremost a populist and that this is an election year. I’d be surprised if Netanyahu doesn’t repeatedly reminisce on the experience of his predecessor, Ehud Olmert, who went to a much more popular war in Lebanon, botched it, lost power and set in motion the destruction of his own party; although Olmert characteristically leeched on to power for another two and a half years, the inconclusive ending of the war and the severe casualty toll foretold Kadima’s downfall as soon as the ceasefire in Lebanon was enacted. A war with Iran has much higher chances of failure and much greater casualties are at stake. In this situation, such campaigns might – just might – add a few grams of pressure on Netanyahu to stay his hand.

Happy New Year to all in Iran and hope that there will remain peace between the people of Iran and Israel!

I am an Australian who lives in northern Sydney which has had many Jewish immigrants over the years and now has also many Iranian immigrants. I am proud that the established Jewish community and the new Iranian community in my area live and work together in harmony.

Wish that the US and Israeli governments give up their warmongering and stop listening to the religious nutcakes in their ranks!

    9. I was born in Iran and have lived in Sydney for most of my life. I love Iranian people and will never forget my friends and how courteous the Iranians are. I hope that the good people of this world, including the Americans and Israelis will put pressure on their governments to stop this baseless talk of war. I don’t want to see Iran, Syria or Israel destroyed. They all have a right to existance, otherwise they would not have been here.
I believe that it is the “curse” of oil that attracts attention to countries like Iran and the lack of adequate energy supply in the world. It is amazing to hear people talk about nuclear war! who will be the winner?

God Bless all of you people of good will and I hope and pray that your numbers may increase day-by-day.

I HATE WAR!!! I do not hate the entire Jewish people. as the Al-Qur’an (the KORAN) said, there are good Jews! Prove me I am wrong! The problems are only with the WICKED Jews (the Zionists) and WICKED “Muslims) — which are many!

Alas, I forgot my password at FaceBook, it has been frustrating to re-activate it. Took MANY steps. I do not wish to waste my time, FaceBook!

“I charge you all that each one of you concentrate all the thoughts of your heart on love and unity. When a thought of war comes, oppose it by a stronger thought of peace. A thought of hatred must be destroyed by a more powerful thought of love. Thoughts of war bring destruction to all harmony, well-being, restfulness and content.

Thoughts of love are constructive of brotherhood, peace, friendship, and happiness.”

      From the Psrsian Baha’i Wrttings

When soldiers of the world draw their swords to kill, soldiers of God clasp each other’s hands! So may all the savagery of man disappear by the Mercy of God, working through the pure in heart and the sincere of soul. Do not think the peace of the world an ideal impossible to attain!

Nothing is impossible to the Divine Benevolence of God.

If you desire with all your heart, friendship with every race on earth, your thought, spiritual and positive, will spread; it will become the desire of others, growing stronger and stronger, until it reaches the minds of all men.

Do not despair! Work steadily. Sincerity and love will conquer hate. How many seemingly impossible events are coming to pass in these days! Set your faces steadily towards the Light of the World. Show love to all; `Love is the breath of the Holy Spirit in the heart of Man’. Take courage! God never forsakes His children who strive and work and pray! Let your hearts be filled with the strenuous desire that tranquillity and harmony may encircle all this warring world. So will success crown your efforts, and with the universal brotherhood will come the Kingdom of God in peace and goodwill.”

See how there are kind and decent people all over the world – but their “lords and masters” are satanic, and those are the fiends that want war and death and destruction so they can make more money and get more power. How can we get rid of those evil parasites and send them to Hell where they belong?

I was born in Minnesota, USA and live there still. My grandparents ancestors came from Luxembourg and north of the Arctic Circle Norway. I look like most white folks you see pictured in the USA.

However,I participated in the National Geographic’s Genographic Project to study DNA, and – to my surprise – learned that my DNA is Jewish – but NOT from Israel, but instead the most common DNA I have,by a large percentage,is Jews in Palestine, Iraq and Iran. Who knew? To me it just underscores that we REALLY are all brothers and sisters.

    29. I speak for myself, short of Iranian public demonstration for freedom of Iran, we need your help to bomb the hell out of Revolutionary Guards buildings and garrisons only, this may give us courage to come out and get rid of them bastards. Bombing nuclear facilities will not do any good and can be put to good use after bastards are gone.

A few years ago, Israel offered financial incentives for Iranian Jews to emigrate to Israel, but virtually all of them said “No thank you, the quality of life is better in Iran.”

In spite of some restrictions and persecutions by the regime, Iranian society overall is relatively pluralist, and most Iranian Jews perfer that to being in Israel, surrounded by angry people on all sides.

First of all, Israel cannot bomb Iran; it would be better if they can say – Iran – Please do not bomb Israel.

Second, Persians do not have problem with Jews as history bears witness. So, lets separate the issue of Israel from Jews. The problem is with Zionism.

Islamic Republic defends the oppressed against imperialism and occupiers. Israel is killing Palestinians, and thus Islamic Iran cannot tolerate that ……… there is no problem with Jews whatsoever once the issue of Israel is resolved

Im an iranian, and on behalf of all my friends and relatives who make about 200 people, and on behalf of most iranians, like to say we love you Israelis, we are trditionally best friends, there are some who cant see the friendship between the two nations, I hope Israeli goverment realize that, though i have no hope for some iranian goverment official wanting to realize this.. but im sure most of them do!!!
I remember as a kid in Shiraz we had a jewish family neigbour, who were the favoriteof all the residents in the area, they live in Isreil now and we miss them much. we have met few times since then in other countries. I have met maby jews including Adrian Broody the hollywood actor, personally, and they are just lovely,
Israelis pls note that Iran goverment does not represent the iranian nation, Iranian are amongst the most educated people and they are not terrorists. as we believe the samw about Israeilis.. our dream is to be united the two countries and through this unity balance the problems in the middleast!!!!!!

I am an Iranian moslim , we can find good and bad in any community , I respect all believes those bring love , light and peace , and I believe if those Israelis who call them selves Israel’s leaders are not representing peoples idea and are only thinking for their own pocket benifits also Iranians in same position ! If they even are not thinking for their own pocket or benefit of any kind ( power, etc. ) then they are absolutely idiots to make crime for their stupidity that they might think God sent them to the earth to make crime and make men , women , children …… cry for days and nights ….. why shouldn’t we people love each other ? Just because a stupid guy sitting there and knitting dirty thoughts ?
any way as I am among the people I know Iranian people don’t hate Israelis also Jews are very respected even now after more than 30 years of propaganda .
I hope humanity goes to a place that people even don’t need their governments for their passports , I think best solution is Facebook passport for all ! and the profile to be verified and be truthful …..

As an Iranian, I would like to say Hello to all people in Israel. The fact is that we all do love you people but we don’t have any opportunity to give you our respects and our friendship. All that I want to say is that, no matter what the governments say, we don’t care. There is no war or conflict between us.
To all of my brothers and sisters in Israel , there are more than 80million people in my country-Iran, that love you ,respect you ,and want to know you.

      God Bless you all…
