The only thing being institutionalized is the fact that Ariel is going to remain a part of Israel in any future arrangement. Israeli society has long ago accepted this. Get over it.

I see, @xyz. Presumably you consider Al Quds to be a "university" because the degrees it confers are not recognised by Israel? Or don't you go in for those "word games"?

(1) Frankenthaler himself is an illegal settler because he lives in west Jerusalem which was illegally annexed by Israel in 1949 and which is not recognized to this day by the US or any other countries, that I am aware of.

(2) Frankenthaler's word games like putting the word "university" in quotation marks is just like the games Arabs play by not showing Israel on a map or countries not recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Who cares? Playing with words does not change reality.

And that is over and above the questions of the status of universities in Israel. A considerable number of people inside Israel that accept university status for Israeli universities are shocked by the acceptance of the Ariel institution. As you know, @xyz.

If I recall correctly, the structures within Israel-proper refused to confer university status on this insitution, hence a new structure had to be invented for the settlements in order to confer that status.
.
Hence to some it is not a proper university.

L. Frankenthaler-
Tell me, do you put quotes around the names "Hebrew University" and "Tel Aviv University" because the Givat Ram campus of HU is sitting on land occpupied in 1948 that belonged to the Arab village of Sheikh Badr and TAU is sitting on land occupied in 1948 that belonged to the Arab village of Sheikh Munis? Aren't they insitutionalizing the occupation as well?

I don't understand why the word "University" is in quotes in the article. How is it not a university? The fact that the writer doesn't like where it is sitting does not detract from its being a university. It has students, it grants degrees, it has research being conducted there and its degrees are recognized in the rest of the world. Sounds like a university to me, unless the writer is trying to use Orwellian newspeak in which he arbitrarily changes the meaning of words to fit some sort of political agenda.
