This evening, activists held a banner in front of McEwan at a large literary event connected to the book festival in Jerusalem. The banner, “Ian McEwan Shaking Hands with Apartheid”, was a reference to McEwen’s photo opportunities with Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat and Israeli president Shimon Peres as part of his prize recognition. Fittingly, one of the activists who held the banner is the great grandson of Nobel prize wining Israeli author S.Y. Agnon. Activists also handed out fliers about BDS in the auditorium hall (see below).
Tonight’s action was part of a growing number of protests aimed at Jerusalem’s international appeal. Mayor Nir Barkat has announced major changes to Jerusalem branding from simply a holy place to an international cultural capital. Events such as the Jerusalem book festival, next months first ever Jerusalem Marathon and other cultural events in the city are part of Barkat’s master plan to rebrand the city. Israeli activists have been successful in disrupting these events in order to bring light to the aggressive policies of ethnic cleansing that are taking place in East Jerusalem.

Though regrettable, Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem does not constitute apartheid. Forcing Arabs to share a city with Jews is the opposite of apartheid. Dishonest and cynical use of international law discredits the left, it doesn’t empower it.

Richard, in JLM separate legal statuses constitute apartheid. And in the west bank , separate legal systems certainly constitute apartheid.

not regrettable, criminal.

Ofer is spot on. Pre-1967, the zionist state is apartheid because it is a Jewish state. Post 1967, theft is added on. The Goldstone Report is a belated effort of the UN to rectify the mistake it made in 1948. MrMCEWN by visiting any Jewish state is supporting apartheid

Raed, your view makes it very easy for most moral Israelis to stop trying all together. Defining ANY Jewish state as an apartheid state is bogus, and immoral, especially since there are so many Muslim states which I’m sure you’re totally fine with their definition. When there’s a synagogue (or a church) in Saudi Arabia, wake me up.
I agree with Richard – what is happening in East Jerusalem is the opposite problem – annexation, not apartheid. And Ofer, discrimination is not apartheid.
I do agree however that the situation in the fully Israeli controlled areas (C) of the west bank constitutes apartheid, but on such a small scale that that’s not the main issue. The main issue is to let a viable Palestinian state arise, and the dismantling of all settlements and road blocks.

Eyal, gullible you. As you know very well, Israel also controls the Palestinians of areas A and B (please spare me the quibbles about them paying municipal tax to the PA).
And the Palestinians of east Jerusalem CANNOT buy property in large parts of west Jerusalem. They do not have Israeli citizenship. Apartheid.
