Hi,
After the Shalit prisoner swap, a New York Times article reported that some freed Palestinian prisoners convicted of murder expressed regret for killing, and one who expressed sympathy for the family of the person he killed.
However it did not identify by name anyone who said such a thing. Is anyone aware of any interview with a freed prisoner from the Shalit swap who expressed any remorse for their acts at all.
This is not a criticism, I am just trying to find some information to substantiate the NY Times report.
Thank you.

There is one big difference between Shlomo Ben-Yosef and Burghal. Shlomo Ben-Yosef was on the same side as me, whereas Burghal is the enemy. I am under no post-Modernist compulsion to say that everybody in the is the same and has the same justifications for what they do.

Lets assume they were schoolchildren. That still should be no reason to kill, torture or tease the prisoner. A moreal country treats its prisoners humanely.

It is impossible to engage in an occupation with a racial/linguistic/religious divide and not abuse detainees and prisoners. It happened in the US for decades and probably still does sometimes. This is where the struggle really is, about what we become in the midst of conflict. I do not envy Israel in this at all; I doubt how I would fare under the psychological condition--I'd make a bad show, I think. But this is where the real fight is. When you have power, can you decry its abuse.
.
The instance Larry D. relates is telling. I am not a nationalist for such reasons. But most people are--and will so remain.
.
Have the courts heard petitions based on such cases? Or is this an area where legal immunity has evolved. If so, could the courts take the law back?

ben israel: i find it fascinating that your comments are all about israeli "victimization." i think this reflects a common--and dangerous--tendency in the discourse surrounding israel/palestine.

In that spirit, Ben Israel, let's point out that Shlomo Ben Yosef's "attempted attack that also didn't do any harm to anyone" was his throwing of a grenade at a bus carrying Arab passengers, a grenade that didn't go off, presumably to his profound regret. Ben Yosef was a freedom fighter and a terrorist, but in Israel he's glorified to this day strictly as a freedom fighter, one of the Olei Hagardom, those who went to the gallows, who are memorialized annually in the Knesset and have any number of streets named after them.
