  1. A letter from Albert Einstein and other notables to the New York Times on December 4, 1948 shows in 1948 they were very aware of the dangerous road Zionism was on:

  3. No.

  5. Shas has always held this promise for the Liberal Israeli crown and has always disappointed. No one should hold their breath.

  7. “The question is whether the leaders of the center, ie. Livni, Lapid and Yachimovitch are willing to reach out, make peace a priority, and take the historic political decisions necessary to achieve it.”

All well and good, but do you really expect Balad and Kadima to have the same concept of “peace”? I’d love to see the discussion between Zoabi and Livni about international law and basic human rights. Ha!

  9. @Maggie: I take your point, but if the centre or centre-left ever hope to seize the reigns of power from the right, they are going to have to start thinking a bit more “out of the box”. Otherwise, all figures point to the formation of a narrow majority led by Likud next time around, together with Yisrael Beiteinu at the helm, and a spattering of minor extreme religious-rightist parties who are almost fanatical in their devotion to “Judea and Samaria” and the settlement project. The future does not look bright I’m afraid for the next generation of liberal US Jews to be engaged positively with Israel.

  11. Chances are, they’re a little worried the current wave of anti-haredi feeling might produce a result that cuts into their educational budgets (the most important item to them, by far). So they’re laying the ground for possible inclusion in a left-of-center government that would be less hawkish towards the Palestinians but would still preserve Shas’ financial arrangements.

Or maybe Vaknin thinks Deri might become next leader of Shas, and that it will help his (V’s) career to appear more dovish…

If Deri were to become leader of Shas, that might be Israel’s best shot at peace and at a future.

  13. the next generation of liberal american jews … who cares if they love israel. it’s no loss! let them all go occupy Oakland.

  15. Yeah Herbie, I love the sophisticated analysis. Who cares. We don’t need anyone: we don’t need those antisemitic British and French to impose sanctions on Iran, nor the Israel-hater Obama to pressure Iran or keep giving us all that money. We don’t need diaspora Jews, and Ariel Sharon’s fear that Israel would turn into an apartheid-like state and lose the support of diaspora Jewry? Well who cares, Sharon turned out to be a Leftist after all. We can just hunker down and we don’t need anyone, not those “post-Zionist” traitors in Israel and the liberal self-haters outside.

    LEMMINGS: OVER THE CLIFF!
There is no time to hesitate! We must now fulfill our right and religious mandate to extend the borders of our range to its God-given boundaries. Jump over the cliff! Now!

Pay no attention to the lies and propaganda of those marginal anti-lemming lemmings, who want to debate it. They are either fools, or liars, or playing into the hands of the foxes. They are blatant enemies of the lemming species, no better than the foxes!

Whatever their motivations (personal power, parochial leftist extreme ideologies, Machiavellian machinations, self-hatred and/or utter lack of concern for lemmings, misguided loyalties, self-delusion, and/or ignorance) the disastrous result is the same.

Our mortal enemies, the foxes, with their red fur and drooling jaws, are close behind us! They are everywhere, with their sharp white bone-crushing teeth! No doubt these left-wing so-called lemmings are in league with the foxes.

No less dangerous is the threat of starvation if we remain here. How can we continue to have our traditional litters of six puppies every generation, if we don’t expand our range? To remain is suicide. The cliff gives us hope — our only hope.

Off the cliff! Into the sea!
