  1. Had Assad, a year ago, agreed to take back the whole Golan Heights, get a shiny new, American equipped army and billions of dollars in aid all in return for having a small Israeli embassy hidden on a back streetin Damascus, behind high walls and surrounded by mean-looking Syrian security forces meant to frighten away local Syrians from making contact, most, if not all of you at 972 and the Israeli progressives community would have praised Bashar as an Arafat- or Sadat-like “strong leader” pulling his people towards the inevitable peace with Israel.
Today, instead, these same people view him as a monster. Go figure it.

  3. Or it’s also possible that if this deal with Assad had gone through, it would have inhibited him from this course of repression.

    Nope, it’s not possible.

  7. Sadat made peace with Israel. He was blown away.
Mubarak nominally maintained the peace agreement with Israel. He was overthrown and could be facing the hangman’s noose.
The Shah of Iran had diplomatic relations with Israel and yet was overthrown.

So how would making a peace agreement with Israel have prevented B. Assad’s current problems?

  9. XYZ, first thing you have to do is get over your Israel-centric world view.
